Seamless steel pipes for oil pipelines are the core pressure-bearing materials in oil and gas exploration, development, gathering, and long-distance transportation projects. With features such as no welds, excellent mechanical properties, and strong sealing capabilities, they can meet the demands of oil and gas transportation under high temperatures, high pressures, strong corrosion, and complex geological environments. They are key foundational materials for ensuring the safe and stable operation of the oil and gas industry.

I. Core Features and Technical Requirements

Seamless steel pipes for oil pipelines must meet the stringent operational conditions of oil and gas transportation, with their core characteristics and technical requirements centered on four key aspects: pressure resistance, corrosion resistance, crack resistance, and precision.

1. High strength and high pressure-bearing capacity

Oil and gas transmission operates under extreme pressure conditions, with long-distance pipelines reaching 10-15MPa and oilfield gathering pipelines typically operating at 4-10MPa. This requires pipeline materials to exhibit exceptional yield strength, tensile strength, and deformation resistance. Steel grades are classified according to China's GB/T 9711 standard and the international API 5L standard, with core grades including L245, L290, L360, L415, L485, X42, X52, X60, X70, and X80. Higher steel grade numbers indicate greater yield strength and pressure-bearing capacity (e.g., X80 steel grade has a yield strength of ≥555MPa). Seamless structures completely eliminate stress concentration at welds, significantly reducing high-pressure cracking and leakage risks, which represents their core advantage over welded pipeline materials.

2. Strong corrosion resistance

Oil and gas media often contain hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), carbon dioxide (CO₂), chloride ions (Cl⁻), and moisture, which can easily cause hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC), sulfide stress corrosion cracking (SSCC), and electrochemical corrosion in pipelines. Therefore, pipelines must meet stringent corrosion resistance requirements: First, they should be fabricated from pure steel with low sulfur (S≤0.015%) and low phosphorus (P≤0.020%) content to minimize corrosion-sensitive impurities. Second, targeted anti-corrosion treatments should be applied based on operational conditions—such as 3PE (three-layer polyethylene coating) for long-distance pipelines, epoxy powder coatings, or stainless steel composite layers for offshore or highly corrosive environments. Third, pipelines must pass anti-corrosion tests like HIC and SSCC to ensure stable operation in sulfur-and CO₂-containing media.

3. Excellent low-temperature toughness and crack resistance

Oil pipelines frequently traverse extreme cold regions (e.g., Northeast and Northwest oilfields, as well as cross-border pipelines). The low-temperature environment can compromise the toughness of pipe materials, leading to brittle cracking. Therefore, pipes must demonstrate excellent low-temperature impact toughness, with conventional requirements specifying an impact energy (Akv) of ≥40J at-20°C, while sub-zero regions demand ≥60J at-40°C. Additionally, pipes must pass the Drop Weight Test (DWTT) to ensure fracture toughness, preventing sudden pipeline ruptures caused by external forces or stress fluctuations in cold conditions.

4. High-precision dimensions and sealing performance

Pipeline pipes must undergo on-site butt welding, where dimensional accuracy directly determines welding quality and sealing performance. National standards specify outer diameter tolerances of ±1.0% and wall thickness tolerances of ±1.5% (with precision-grade tolerances up to ±0.8%). Pipe ends must be machined into V-shaped or U-shaped bevels, with strict control over bevel angles and chamfer dimensions to ensure complete fusion during welding. The surface roughness of pipe materials must be ≤12.5μm to minimize welding impurities and enhance seam sealing.

II. Common Materials, Steel Grades and Implementation Standards

The material and grade of seamless steel pipes for oil pipelines should be selected based on the transported medium, pressure, temperature, and environmental corrosiveness. The core implementation follows national and international standards, with the specific correspondence as shown in the table below:

III. Core Production Process

The production of seamless steel pipes for oil pipelines primarily employs hot rolling and cold drawing/cold rolling processes, with each method tailored to specific specifications and precision requirements. The core workflow is as follows:

1. Hot-rolled seamless steel pipe (mainstream process, suitable for large-diameter and thick-walled pipes)

Core Process: Round tube blank (made of high-quality carbon structural steel or alloy structural steel) →Heating (1200-1300°C to ensure plasticity) →Piercing (using an inclined rolling piercing machine to transform solid round blanks into hollow preforms, with strict control of wall thickness uniformity) →Continuous rolling/ sizing (adjusting outer diameter via continuous rolling mill, with dimensional tolerance precisely controlled by sizing machine) →Cooling (air or water cooling to prevent grain coarsening) →Straightening (eliminating bending deformation) →Non-destructive testing →Anti-corrosion treatment →Finished product inspection →Warehousing.

Key features: Exceptional mechanical properties and uniform wall thickness, suitable for large-diameter (DN100-DN600) and thick-walled (6-25mm) pipes in long-distance pipelines, with a production share exceeding 70%.

2. Cold-drawn/cold-rolled seamless steel pipes (suitable for small-diameter, high-precision pipes)

Core Process: Hot-rolled tube →Pickling (removing surface oxide to prevent scratches during drawing) →Lubrication (applying specialized lubricant to reduce drawing resistance) →Cold drawing/rolling (precision diameter reduction through die drawing or cold rolling) →Annealing (relieving internal stresses from cold working to enhance toughness) →Finishing (cutting, straightening, polishing) →Non-destructive testing →Product inspection →Warehousing.

Key features: High dimensional accuracy (outer diameter tolerance ±0.5%) and excellent surface finish. Designed for urban branch pipelines and oilfield fine branch pipelines, it supports small diameters (DN15-DN100) and thin-walled (2-8mm) pipes, making it ideal for applications requiring stringent dimensional precision.

IV. Key Quality Inspection Points

To ensure the safety of oil and gas transportation, seamless steel pipes for oil pipelines must undergo comprehensive mandatory inspections prior to leaving the factory. The key inspection items are as follows:

1. Non-destructive testing (for identifying internal/surface defects)

-Ultrasonic Testing (UT): 100% detection of internal defects in pipes (e.g., shrinkage cavities, cracks, interlayers), ensuring no hidden risks affecting pressure-bearing capacity;

-Eddy current testing (ET): Detects surface and near-surface defects (e.g., scratches, oxide skin inclusions, micro-cracks) in pipes, particularly suitable for surface quality inspection of cold-drawn pipes;

-Radiographic Testing (RT): Inspect pipe ends or butt welds (if applicable) to precisely locate and measure defect locations and sizes, with a sampling ratio of no less than 30% for long-distance pipeline materials.

2. Mechanical Property Testing (Verification of Load-bearing Capacity and Toughness)

-Tensile test: Determine yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation to ensure compliance with the corresponding steel grade requirements;

-Impact test: Impact energy testing at ambient temperature and low temperatures (-20°C/-40°C) to verify low-temperature toughness and prevent brittle fracture;

-Hardness test: To evaluate the hardness distribution of the tubing, preventing excessive hardness from reducing toughness or insufficient hardness from causing wear.

3. Corrosion resistance testing (for sulfur/acid-containing environments)

-Hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) test: Immersing pipes in a simulated sulfur-containing medium to detect hydrogen-induced cracking.

-Sulfide stress corrosion (SSCC) test: Evaluates the pipeline's resistance to stress corrosion under combined tensile stress and sulfide-containing medium.

-Electrochemical corrosion test: Evaluate the adhesion and corrosion resistance of the anti-corrosion coating to ensure no peeling or pinholes.

4. Sealing Performance and Dimensional Accuracy Inspection

-Hydrostatic test: The system shall be pressurized to 1.5 times the rated pressure, maintained for over 30 minutes, and shall be deemed qualified if no leakage or permanent deformation occurs.

-Dimensional inspection: Use laser diameter gauge and wall thickness gauge to measure outer diameter, wall thickness, and ovality to ensure compliance with tolerance requirements;

-Bevel inspection: Check the pipe end bevel angle and chamfer size to ensure compatibility with on-site welding procedures.

V. Application and Maintenance Precautions

1. Precise scenario selection

-Long-distance pipelines: Prioritize X70 and X80 high-grade hot-rolled seamless steel pipes for high-pressure, long-distance transportation, reducing pipeline density and costs.

-For sulfur-containing oil and gas gathering and transportation, use anti-sulfur pipe materials (e.g., L360QS, X60QS) that must pass HIC and SSCC tests.

-High-temperature well conditions: Use alloy structural steel (12CrMoVG, 15CrMoG) for oil and gas transportation at temperatures above 400°C.

-Urban branch lines: L245 and 20# cold-drawn steel pipes are selected to balance cost-effectiveness and dimensional accuracy.

2. Installation and Construction Requirements

-Welding control: The butt welds at pipe ends shall be constructed with an argon arc welding base and arc welding filler. All welds must undergo 100% ultrasonic and radiographic testing to ensure absence of defects such as incomplete fusion or porosity.

Thermal expansion and contraction adaptation: Long-distance pipelines are equipped with expansion joints at 100-200m intervals to prevent deformation caused by temperature variations.

-Anti-corrosion joint treatment: After on-site welding, immediate anti-corrosion treatment must be applied. The joint filler material must be compatible with the original anti-corrosion layer (e.g., 3PE joint filler tape) to prevent corrosion at the joint.

3. Operation and Maintenance Points

-Regular inspection: Conduct annual pipeline wall thickness measurement using ultrasonic thickness gauges, with particular focus on identifying severely corroded areas (e.g., low-lying waterlogged zones, saline-alkali soils);

-Anti-corrosion layer maintenance: Conduct cathodic protection testing and use ground leak detectors to identify and promptly repair damaged anti-corrosion layers.

-Media monitoring: Regularly test the H₂S and CO₂levels in the conveyed medium. If concentrations exceed limits, promptly adjust anti-corrosion measures or replace the piping.
